The end of summer can be much more bearable if you choose to visit Barcelona in mid-September. This is the time when the city dresses up to celebrate its oldest festive event. Considered the true festival of Barcelona, La Mercè 2016 will be the best opportunity to enjoy music and culture in its broadest sense. Take note of what you already know about the 2016 edition and pay attention to the upcoming major developments.
The La Mercè festivities will take place between Thursday 22nd and Sunday 25th September. The Barcelona City Council has confirmed that the number of streets and urban spaces that will host acts will be considerably expanded. One such venue will be the popular Parque de la Trinidad. As usual, the Barcelona Acción Musical festival (BAM) will encompass most concerts between 18th and 24th. This section will have a large presence of music groups and French artists, while Paris has been designated as the guest city this year.

The BAM festival is a free, outdoor concert that celebrates all kinds of musical styles and genres. The versatile Catalan group La Gran Pegatina offers one of the most anticipated performances at the Parque del Forum. Plaza de San Jaime, Avenida de María Cristina and la Plaza de los Ángeles will be the other main stages of musical events. The highlights of the shows will be performances from La Raíz, Kiko Veneno, Isaac Ullam as well as a special concert organised by Europa FM radio station.
But the music festival in La Mercè doesn't just consist of Spanish artists. The theatrical performing arts show will be represented by two French groups, Compagnie SID and Compagnie Retouramont, who take their artistic show to Montjuic Castle. One of the most impressive star performances scheduled at this event include Retuoramont artists, with a vertical sunset scene on the castle's walls. Meanwhile in Parque de la Ciudadela, various exhibitions and performances of all kinds will take place.
Obviously, all of the above activities are combined with the most deeply rooted traditions in this centennial celebration. The festival of La Mercè 2016 formally begins with an opening speech in the Salón de los Cien del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona before leading the way for the famous giant parades and popular fireworks known as 'correfocs'. Especially recommended are the scheduled performances by local groups, including the Concurso de Grupos Sardanista (Sardana Group Competition).
