Discover the best of Pals, a beautiful town on the Costa Brava

The medieval town of Pals and its beach

In the Baix Empordà region, the town of Pals, a small medieval town with 2,500 inhabitants, is one of the most beautiful on the Costa Brava.

Its beautiful cobbled streets, its walls and its Gothic buildings receive numerous tourists throughout the year and especially in the summer months.

Its territory even extends to the sea (almost 6 km from the center), where the extensive Platja de Pals is located (divided into Platja Gran, to the south; and Platja del Grau, to the north).

In this article, we talk about the main places to see in Villa de Pals and its magnificent beach.

What to visit in Pals

Pals has just over two thousand inhabitants and is made up of 3 towns: Pals, the old town; Masos de Pals, an area full of restaurants and accommodation, mainly campsites; and Pals beach, where the beaches are located.

Pals and its medieval town

Pals is currently in a good state of conservation thanks to Jaume Pi i Figueres, a surgeon from the town, who for more than 30 years dedicated himself to buying and restoring some of the houses in the town that were in a state of semi-abandonment.

The church Sant Pere de Pals

It is the main monument of the population, the church Sant Pere de Pals (San Pedro de Pals) mainly of Gothic style, built on an old Romanesque temple, from the end of the 10th century, of which some elements are preserved. It was built with stones from the temple itself, which was already in a very dilapidated state.

Plaza Mayor of Pals

Like any other town on the Costa Brava, there is the main square. In Pals, the square allows us to enjoy and have a refreshing drink, contemplate the Gothic arch that is part of the wall, the Town Hall (Casa de la Vila) and the Tourist Office, which allows us to collect all the information about the town.

The Tower of the Hours

Following our path to the highest part of the mountain we can enjoy the Torre de las Horas, also known as the Torre del Homenaje, which is 15 meters high and is what remains to us today of the old Castle of Pals, destroyed in the 15th century. during the Catalan Civil War.

The Viewpoint of Josep Pla or Pedró

Near the Torre de las Horas is the Mirador de Josep Pla, which is another place to see the rice fields that surround the town of Pals.

The viewpoint pays homage to the writer and journalist Josep Plà, born in nearby Calella de Palafrugell and who left Pals with the famous phrase:

"Pals is not worth one visit, but a hundred visits, because its location offers the possibility of seeing one of the most beautiful and unforgettable landscapes in the country."

Pals Beach

The Villa de Pals is quite small but the extension of the municipality is surprisingly large.

Pals Beach forms a unique natural environment with the Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands and Bajo Ter, which is why, in its surroundings, there are numerous hiking trails.

Thanks to its pine forests, dunes and the fantastic views of the Medes Islands, Pals beach stands out for its crystal clear waters and extensive strips of golden sand, surrounded by nature.

Pals Beach has all kinds of facilities such as showers, public toilets, a tourist information post (Playa Gran) and parking. In turn, it has access for people with reduced mobility.

Around it there are many gastronomic offers and recreational activities.

Water sports and boat trips

Pals Beach is an ideal place to practice water sports. With the Levante and Tramuntana winds, conditions are good enough to practice surfing, windsurfing or kite surfing. The current in this area is quite strong.

Also, if you practice scuba diving or like to sail, Pals Beach is a very popular destination.

Golf courses

If you are passionate about golf, in Playa de Pals and very close, a few kilometers away, in Torroella de Montgrí you will find 2 golf courses.

The golf course in Platja de Pals is located in the middle of the Arenals de Mar estate, on some dunes covered with enormous pine forests planted 70 years ago, designed by Baltasar Parera Vilar and his wife Rosa Coll Llach in the early 1960s.

They provided all the necessary land, as well as the construction of the first nine holes, the clubhouse and all the initial machinery for maintenance.

The Golf de Pals was the venue in 1972, with the dispute of the XLVI Spanish Open

Nearby there is a wide range of accommodation and restaurants.

World-renowned golf architect Robert von Hagge designed the two courses, Links and Forest, this being his first project on the Costa Brava and in Spain.
