Unique Christmas trees – 3 fresh ideas for positioning your tree this Christmas

'Christmas time! That man must be a misanthrope indeed, in whose breast something like a jovial feeling is not roused – in whose mind some pleasant associations are not awakened – by the recurrence of Christmas.' The wise words of Victorian novelist Charles Dickens remind us of the near universal joy of the holiday season.

Thankfully, we don't have to wait until Christmas Day for the excitement of the festivities to begin. For many, the period begins with decoration – the central feature of which is the tree. Here, we take a look at some bold new ways to position your tree about the home.

1. The outdoor tree

The fun of Christmas decorating is by no means limited to your house's interior. Walk around any neighbourhood during the holiday season and you're sure to see all manner of festive decoration: from classic white lighting displays and opulent wreaths to decorated sleighs.

For those with ample outdoor space in front of their property, this presents a valuable opportunity for a dramatic seasonal arrangement. One of the most significant benefits to having a tree outside is the lack of size restrictions, meaning you can choose as large a tree as you desire. You can also share the enjoyment of your decorations with your neighbours.

The Nordmann Fir is a fine variety for outdoor use, thanks to its deep green colouring and excellent needle retention. The latter makes it resistant to the elements, which may damage weaker species.

2. One for the entrance hall

Erecting a unique Christmas tree outside isn't the only way to dazzle your guests upon arrival. Your home's entrance hall is another fantastic place for this centre piece, setting the tone early on and really letting the Christmas spirit circulate the house. Placing the tree as centrally as possible is ideal, as this allows it to be seen from the greatest number of angles. The broad range of species available today means you should have no trouble finding something to fit into the exact space available in your entrance hall.

A classic Norway Spruce is an excellent choice for entrance halls, thanks to their rich, lingering scent. Laden it with dried sliced oranges or ribbon-wrapped cinnamon to create a sensory gift to visitors upon entry.

For a more unusual Christmas tree option, interior designer Lisa Staprans recommends a 'remembrance tree'. Hang a small fir with ornaments which evoke memories of those no longer with us, so that you can celebrate their memories at this special time.

3. Something for everyone

While having one main, central tree as a focal point lends some grandeur to your décor, you don't have to stop there. Placing numerous unique Christmas trees all around is another way to spread cheer to every corner of the home. This also makes for a wonderful way to welcome guests over the festive period. Extending your decorations to their guest rooms will make your visitors feel part of the wider household during their stay.

When selecting your unique Christmas trees, carefully consider how their size, shape, material, and colour will fit with the feel and décor of each of your rooms. Naturally blue pine needles will bring some colour into monochrome modern spaces, for example. More traditional greens work better with period interiors. Continue to experiment with styles and placement until you achieve a holiday feel that's right for your home.
