Contemporary art in Madrid

During the summer season, Madrid's population decreases due to people leaving for the holidays. This makes it more comfortable for those who remain in this city to enjoy its cultural offer. Most museums provide air conditioning for utmost comfort so you can spend many hours exploring the art galleries.

Although the most important and striking museum is the classical Prado, it is not the only one in Madrid. This is a city where contemporary art events play a major role in satisfying eveyone's taste.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo) is a baroque-style premise located in the valuable building at the former headquarters of the architect Pedro de Ribera. This is a place that you shouldn't miss out on. Its permanent collection is mainly composed of graphic works and paintings, but also sculptures, photographs and drawings are displayed chronologically. These are divided into categories such as:

    • New creators
    • Realisms
    • New figuration and abstraction of 80
    • Legacy Caneja
    • Masters of abstraction
    • School of Madrid
    • Historical Avant-garden

During this summer, the art scene is enriched with exhibitions like "El peso de un gesto" in CaixaForum Madrid until September 18th. This exhibition is based on the Portuguese artist Julião Sarmento's works from collections of La Caixa Foundation, Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and Centro de Arte Moderna (CAM) Gulbekina Fundaçao Lisbon. Through collective references to architecture, literature, and film, the artist has left the work unfinished so that viewers can come up with their own conclusions.

Until 29th August, in the National Museum Centre of Art Reina Sofia, the Bilbao artist Erlea Maneros Zabala manages the "Fissures" project, which has connecting rooms on two of the building's floors. Her work analyses the effects of image production, addressing the contexts generated and distribution modes. Also, issues such as the ownership of the work and relations between craftsmanship and mass production are discussed. The prestige of Erlea Maneros has led her to hold exhibitions in Guggenheim or REDCAT in Los Angeles.

Those who are staying in Madrid this summer have until 11th of September to visit the free VI Biennial of Contemporary Art Foundation ONCE held in the Palacio de Cibeles del Ayuntamiento. In this edition, the impact of "art technology" is analysed, with 31 national and international artists, half of whom have some kind of disability. The technological influence is examined from two aspects:

• Giving support to the disabled artist for artistic creation

• To provide people with disabilities access to enjoy the art culture
