Energy saving measures in the home

The consumption of energy is at historical highs, which translates into really high bills. However, despite the fact that heating and air conditioning units are used more due to the extreme temperatures in many cities, it is still necessary to carry out a series of measures that save energy. Here we will mention the most important ones.

The first step to saving energy in the home is to ensure adequate insulation is used. In many cases, it is sufficient to seal and repair the window joint cracks, although in some cases deeper measures such as changing the enclosures may be advisable. It is estimated that this factor can lead to an energy saving of approximately 200 euros per year.

On the other hand, equipping the air conditioners with thermostats that allow to maintain the temperature is also a very wise decision. In fact, many air conditioners already have the 'Inverter' technology, which stops when they reach a comfortable temperature and resume operation when necessary. This can mean a saving of between 10 and 12 per cent a year, ie about 60 euros.

LED bulbs and lamps are expensive, that's for sure. However, they are also a highly profitable investment, especially when compared to incandescent consumption of a lifetime. In addition, the life of the LEDs is really long as they remain in perfect condition for many years. To give you an idea, replacing all the lights in an 80 square metre home can bring with it a saving of 200 euros a year.

It is also convenient to use appliances more efficiently. For example, it is advisable to use the dishwasher or the washing machine only when they are in full capacity. Likewise, they should never be left in 'standby' mode since, even if little, they will still consume electricity. Therefore, it is always best to turn them off or unplug them. It may seem like a minor issue but it can save you up to 30 euros a year.

Doing the laundry with cold water or, at most, at 40 ° C instead of 60 ° C is another excellent saving measure. Although the difference is only 20 ° C, the energy expenditure of the washing machine is 55 per cent higher at hot temperatures. For its part, it is also convenient to adjust the refrigerator to between 5 ° C and 7 ° C, as well as the freezer to between -18 ° C and -16 ° C as these are more than enough temperatures to properly preserve food. Also, clean the rear part to remove dust and, if you do not have a No Frost refrigerator, remove the accumulated frost, it can mean a 10 per cent saving in the annual energy consumption of this appliance.
