Engel & Völkers in Madrid celebrates International Women's Day

International Women's Day will be celebrated next Thursday, March 8th. At this point in the history of mankind, it may appear that all the clichés and mantras that were mentioned about women have been happily overcome. Significent progress has certainly been made in recent decades, which does not preclude the fact that there are still many pending goals for true equality between men and women. We at Engel & Völkers in Madrid fully identify with women's demands and we do so for several reasons.

The first and most important is none other than our company's philosophy. We firmly believe that one's professional worth isn't dictated by gender and our staff is a great example in this regard. The Engel & Völkers' team in Madrid is led by a remarkable general manager, Paloma Pérez, who has also been the visible face of our company in many events. Her participation has been essential in the great growth that the brand has experienced in the capital of Spain in recent times - a trend that should go further in the coming years.

The female managerial representation in our firm does not end with just the general director. Career women can look for professionals like Idoia Egaña, the sales director of Chamartín, Rocío Hausmann, sales director in Chamberí, Mercedes Pulido, sales director of Madrid Centro, Mar Herranz, sales director in Northeast Madrid, Belén Egusquiza, responsible for the rental section, Lorena Royo and Elena Cisneros, marketing directors, and Elena Villena and Patricia Basilio, who jointly lead the Human Resources department. It is obvious, therefore, that our organisation can boast of having made equality one of its main trademarks.

To all the above-mentioned senior positions we must add a more extensive list of professionals who work in each of our departments. Women are present at Engel & Völkers in Madrid in departments, such as photography, accounting, customer service and reception. Our hiring policy never takes into consideration the sex of the candidates. We simply select those profiles that we believe best fit our line of work. It is true that this policy has resulted in a considerable female presence in the main management positions.

All in all, the upcoming International Women's Day leads us to reflect on the difficulties that still have to be overcome by career women like those who accompany us every day in the office. The Spanish society can boast a great maturity in this sense but it is no less true that the concept of 'glass ceiling' is still valid in many professional or academic fields. To make female contributions in the property market visible, the great results at Engel & Völkers is a humble contribution to this cause.

Internationally, the March 8th event will carry a message that, perhaps, it never did before. Movements like "Me Too" have revealed the harsh reality of many female professionals from whom their respective industries demand additional requirements before they are selected for the job. The most striking aspect of the matter was that many of the female workers' colleagues were aware of this discrimination or, at least, they sensed it was happening. Of course, many other male professionals did raise their voices against gender inequality.

The "Me Too" campaign is one of the biggest media initiatives, but it's not the first nor the most ambitious event. The history of the struggle of working women to obtain more or less the same rights as their colleagues stems from a long time ago. In fact, the chosen date of March 8th is because in 1908 this was one of the most dramatic days in the fight for equality. We are referring to the fire in New York factory in which a group of workers had imprisoned themselves to protest their working conditions.

By taking that date as an example, we at Engel & Völkers in Madrid give our support to millions of women around the world, especially those who are most vulnerable. Finally, we evoke the powerful image of the statue of a girl who stood in front of the famous Wall Street bull. The Fearless Girl or "girl without fear" only reminds us of the daily struggle of many female workers. We would like to say to all of them; happy International Women's Day.
