Madrid's theatre scene during September

Listing all the theatrical plays that are performed in Madrid is a difficult task, because the number of acts in the capital is diverse. The various publicly owned theatres join numerous private ones to show all kinds of alternative cultural programmes with a variety of theatrical and musical performances.

A long-awaited theatrical show in September is called “El cielo que me tienes prometido”, directed by Ana Diosdado, which will be performed between 7th and 18th at the María Guerrero Theatre. This theatre opened in 1885 and was declared as the main cultural hub that produces many shows. Once such dialectical encounter took place between two single women Teresa de Jesús and the princesa of Éboli. This play paid tribute to Ana Diosdado.

Another great theatrical scene from Rafael Álvarez "El Brujo", pays homage to the great Cervantes in the “Misterios del Quijote” as staged at the Teatros del Canal until September 11th. "El Brujo" represents some classic scenes with unique humour, accompanied by a violin. In the same scenario, between 14th and 25th September, Teresa de Jesús will represent “Teresa o el sol por dentro”, a poetry reading of ancient texts from Santa Teresa.

Another classic and highly popular show is the tragic caricature written by Pedro Muñoz Seca, “La venganza de Don Mendo”. This show will take place between September 8th and October 2nd on the stage of Teatro Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa in plaza de Colón. A large cast of actors bring life to this hilarious astrakhan-shaped medieval comedy.

The Pavón Theatre in Embajadores Street, offers the opportunity to see "Idiota" until 30th October. This hilarious work demonstrates the capacity of human suffering, starring Gonzalo de Castro and Elisabet Gelabert, while between 9th and 28th September, the same theatre will host a free version of the classic “Seis personajes en busca de autor” titled “La función por hacer".

More classic shows are on offer in Teatro Cofidis, Alcalá Street. Built in 1921, this theatre was originally called Palacio de los Recreos. It will show one of the first Shakespeare plays until 11th September. “Trabajos de amor perdidos” is a project shared between Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and la Fundación Siglo de Oro.

Theatre fans can enjoy one of the great offers this month such as "Taxi", as shown in Teatro Latino and starring Josema Yuste. Another show is called “Una boda feliz” which is a French comedy directed by Gabriel Olivares and staged at the classic Reina Victoria Theatre.
