Mountainous towns near Madrid

Mountain populations tend to have special charm for the environment and the usual picturesque buildings with which they adapt to the rugged terrain. These spectacular landscapes, with sunshine during the warmer months and the winter snow, always offer great attractions as well as multiple activities in full contact with nature. Not far from Madrid we can find some of these mountainous towns with deserved fame among its visitors.

In Madrid's Sierra Norte, one of the most beautiful enclaves in the entire community, is the town of Patones, an example of the unique black mountain architecture, at 830 metres of altitude. The division between Patones de Arriba and Patones de Abajo is marked by the Ecological Path of El Barranco, a spectacular path with great beauty that runs parallel to the stream of Patones, among limestone walls. On this path we find the aqueducts belonging to the Atazar canals and the upper Jarama as well as the Cueva del Aire, already inhabited from the Neolithic age. It is also worth strolling through its narrow streets, observing the eco-museum and enjoying the gastronomic delight of its meats and wines.

In the northern slope of the Sierra de Candelario, at an altitude of 1,136 metres in the province of Salamanca, Candelario is located. This is considered one of the most beautiful towns in all of Spain, with its steep urbanisation adapted for centuries to the climatic conditions. Some streets have their typical water fountains that flow through from the nearby mountain. Walking around Candelario allows us to visit the Chapel of the Holy Christ (from the 16th century) or the Nuestra Señora Church and taste its famous sausages and hams.

Just 81 kilometres from Guadalajara is Valverde de los Arroyos, a typical black architecture town, located at Pico Ocejón, at 1,255 metres above sea level. In a privileged environment, with natural wonders nearby such as the waterfalls of more than 80 metres high in Chorreras of Despeñalagua and the bank of the river Sorbe, with its swimming area, Valverde de los Arroyos has local attractions like its well-kept Plaza Mayor.

The highest town of Segovia is at 1,132 metres above sea level and fused prodigiously with nature in the middle of mountainous enclaves such as Puerto de la Quesera, Pico del Lobo or the winter resort of Pinilla is Riofrio de Riaza. The valleys and ravines around the Riaza River form unique landscapes and the Beech of Pedrosa, with its centuries-old trees, twisted and covered with moss brings an incomparable magical air about the place.
