Salamanca district, the "Golden Mile"

The Salamanca district is one of the most exclusive areas of Madrid. This region mainly stands out for its characteristic distribution within the urban framework as well as the high economic level associated with the area. The district was founded in the pre-Ancient Celtic period and stood as an independent city, but in 1860, Queen Isabel II ordered the walls to be worn down, making this district completely urbanised by 1927.

Conceived as an expansion of Madrid before overcrowding it, the project of the Marquis of Salamanca included the latest technical advances in homes, according to trends in the rest of Europe's capitals. There were spacious bedrooms with large windows, running water, heating, toilets and plumbing were the latest proposals that were made to the neighbourhood in order to turn it into an elegant enclave. Today, Salamanca is home to some of the most important commercial headquarters and boasts expensive residential properties.

Currently, the Salamanca district is surrounded by the communities of Castellana, Ortega y Gasset, Goya and Diego de León, while the following three run in parallel; Serrano, Principe de Vergara and Velázquez. The great Marques de Salamanca is at the confluence of Prince of Vergara and Ortega y Gasset and along its wide streets, you can find the best Madrid palaces and monuments. These include the Museo Arqueológico, la Biblioteca Nacional, Plaza de Colón, Plaza, Jardines del Descubrimiento, and the modernist neo-Gothic architecture of the Inmaculada Concepción church in Goya.

The glamour and sophistication of this neighbourhood is evident in the "golden mile" of Madrid - a journey through the streets that boast many prestigious shops. You can find many boutiques from fashion to jewelry and home decoration. Famous designers from around the world display their couture in these boutiques. Fashion icons such as Versace, Hermes, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton and many legendary jewelry sellers including Tiffany's with large catering and leisure establishments have all come together in the most exclusive and elegant area of Madrid.
