The supernatural side of Madrid and its paranormal activities

Madrid is fascinating in many ways, not just for its architecture but also its dark and supernatural side. The official history of Madrid is not complete without some mysterious and unexplainable events that occurred in its buildings. Here is a collection of very famous ghost sightings in Madrid

Love and crime is based on the most popular ghost story in Madrid, located in the former Palacio de Linares, in Cibeles. Today it is known as Casa de America. According to legends, Linares Palace imprisoned the ghosts of the first Marquis de Linares and his daughter. José Murga confessed about his love for Raimunda Osorio to his father, who was presumably the daughter of a cigarette seller. But when his father heard the name of this girl, he sent him to London so he could forget the girl. The reason he sent his son away was because of the extra-marital affair he had himself and in fact, the girl was his son's half sister. This legend says they discovered that the marriage was incestuous and killed his daughter. Since then, ghostly voices and unexplainable happenings have flooded the palace.

The legend of Casa de las Siete Chimeneas or the House of Seven Chimneys, in Plaza del Rey, which is the current headquarters of Ministry of Culture, is also based on love and death. In the 16th century, a beautiful lady named Elena, who was married to Captain Zapata, died in Flanders. The biggest mystery is the disappearance of her corpse and legend has it that the ghost of Elena has been seen on some nights at the rooftop, wearing a white dress and carrying a torch.

The Reina Sofia art museum also has its own grim history. The former San Carlos hospital was the place where many patients died of tuberculosis within its walls. When remodeling took place, many ghostly presences were felt, especially in the basement. It highlights the case of the so-called Ataúlfo, which could be the lost soul of an old priest.pecialmente en el sótano. Destaca el caso del llamado Ataúlfo, que podría ser el alma en pena de un antiguo sacerdote.

A few theatres have their own ghost stories such as the legendary Teatro Eslava (now Joy Eslava), in Arenal street. A playwright was killed by a jeolous director and since then, the ghost of Alfredo Vidal, that was his name, roams on the stage.

Metro also has its own ghost stories, including its most mysterious stop; Tirso de Molina. Its construction among the remains of the old convent of La Merced, resulted in the appearance of the ancient monks and workers who were buried under the platforms. Since then, many have said they can hear falling cries at midnight and even spectral appearances of hooded monks.
