Oliver Stone at Mallorca International Film Festival
Engel & Völkers Joins Film Director Oliver Stone to support Mallorca’s International Film Festival
The three times Oscar winning American film director, Oliver Stone, was in Mallorca for a short stay to support the launch of the new Mallorca International Film Festival (MIFF). During a packed press conference Stone talked about being completely confused by his perception of the island; “I thought Mallorca would be a party island like Ibiza or Marbella. However, I now realise that it’s so much more than that”.
During his stay, the often controversial director of films that include Platoon, Scarface, Born on the 4th of July, JFK and Wall Street, took time out to explore the architecture of Palma and to drive around the island. He told the local media; “You certainly have a very attractive island here and with the support of your local government I am sure Mallorca would be successful in attracting more international film directors.
The President of MIFF, Vincent Russo was clearly delighted to have such a “heavyweight” film director to support the launch of the new festival and commented; “Now Mallorca can have a film festival that this island deserves”.
Mallorca’s unique typography with the Sierra Tramuntana mountain range (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and coastline provides a unique and varied backdrop. Inland, the island’s traditional Mediterranean countryside dominated by olive trees on the stone walled terraces, almond trees on the plains and vineyards creates a rich and colourful environment for potential film makers.
Commenting on the response to the MIFF; “We are delighted to help support this initiative and it’s tremendous to see such a strong response to the Mallorca International Film Festival from the local community and government. It sends a clear message that Mallorca is poised to play a leading role in the international film scene” said Hans Lenz, Managing Director, Engel & Völkers Mallorca Southwest.
