Soon the countryside of Mallorca will be covered with white and rose colours. It’s the blooming almond trees, which convert rural fields in a beautiful spectacle announcing thus the arrival of spring.
The Majorcan almond (“ametlla” in Majorcan) is a very popular nut in the island’s gastronomy but also used in cosmetics for creating perfumes, soaps and lotions.
The cultivation of almonds is dating back to the Roman times. It used to play and still plays an important role in the economy of this Mediterranean region. Nowadays, it is recognised by European Union and listed within the products with protected geographical indication. This undoubtedly guaranties its excellent quality.
The Majorcan almond, ready to be collected by peasants within the months of August, has lots of special properties like high content of good vegetable oil, proteins, vitamins and fibre. In addition it is characterised by its great aromatic intensity.
It is commercialised on the market raw or toasted. In the Majorcan gastronomy we find it in many traditional dishes: "el gató" (typical cake), "coques de torró" (sweet snack) or "el granizado de almendra" (refreshing almond soft drink). It´s also used to produce almond milk, which is a good option for those who do not consume cow or goat milk.
This natural and traditional product is a treasure of the Majorcan rural culture.
To enjoy the spectacle of the almond blossom over Majorcan countryside, it is recommendable to climb hills and peaks, like Alaró, San Salvador and Randa.
The areas around Bunyola, Sóller, Santa Maria, Sencelles, Lloseta, Selva, Inca and Llucmajor also offer spectacular views.
