Building your own garden pond

One of the garden design projects that is becoming increasingly popular is building your own pond. And rightly so, in our opinion, because having an oasis of well-being on your doorstep enhances recreational value and provides a new habitat for many special plants and animals.

Some preliminary considerations are necessary before we can start actively implementing the project. It is certainly possible to build the pond yourself, but both the planning details and the physical effort involved should not be underestimated. The larger the planned water area, the more advisable it is to call in an experienced landscaping specialist. Because as soon as the excavation can no longer be done with spades and hammer drills, mini-excavators and heavier equipment are needed.

What character should the pond have?

The size, shape and above all the character of your future pond will be shaped by the existing garden layout and personal taste. The possibilities are sheer endless. Making a principled decision is helpful: Do you envisage yourself relaxing in the middle of greenery by a natural-looking body of water, or do you favour a more streamlined, modern pond design?

Natural ponds have a gentle, round shape and have a variety of zones consisting of shallow water areas and deeper areas. More modern ponds, on the other hand, are often geometrically laid out, more purposefully designed and can thereby accentuate the style of your garden.

Which place in the garden is best suited for pond construction?

Would you like to make the pond a centrepiece of your garden so that you can enjoy its view from the house or terrace? Or is it intended as an idyllic retreat, a little hidden away, offering relaxing moments thanks to its tranquillity and naturalness?

The character of your pond already discussed above thus also determines the perfect location. Some other factors should also be taken into account. A pond and aquatic plants need light. A balanced mix of daylight and not too much direct sunlight during the day is perfect. Due to the limited depth of a garden pond, the water would otherwise heat up too much and the biological balance would be disturbed.

Also keep an eye on the tree population: Shallow-rooted plants could take root in a foil pond and cause damage. Too many falling leaves encourage the formation of mud and algae and lower the oxygen content of the water. However, if you would like to integrate deciduous trees around your pond, you can always remove the leaves or put up suitable nets in autumn to prevent them from sinking.

You should also plan for the necessary power connection for the circulation pump and filter system. If the pond is not too large, solar solutions can also be used to maintain healthy water conditions.

Which material to use for the pond construction?

For small garden ponds, prefabricated plastic tubs are the quickest and easiest maintenance solution. The various zones are already built in with steps. However, these basins do not allow for much individuality and customisation.

Pond liners can be used to create any desired shape and size. Here, the preparation of the subsurface is very important. It should be absolutely level and free of roots and stones that could damage the liner. The height profile of the future pond is then determined by the excavation.

The different areas of water depth create living conditions for a wide variety of plants and animals. Important tip: If you want to keep fish in the pond later, there should be a deep water zone of at least one metre, which prevents freezing in winter and offers the animals survival options.

Another alternative building material is sodium bentonite. It's a special clay with a high swelling capacity for producing a waterproofing layer. The preparation of the ground, however, requires some expertise and also the planting with baskets is rather intricate, as the ground may not be penetrated by roots.

Enjoy your biotope!

Once you have successfully built your pond, you can immediately start with the planting and let your imagination run wild. We recommend that you seek advice on the choice of plants, as they not only create the atmosphere of your new water landscape, but also function as important oxygen suppliers for the water. They also provide shelter for small animals and breeding sites for water birds. Depending on the water zones and location, an interesting variety of species will settle in your body of water in no time.
