Prehistoric Talayots and homes for modern day families – Menorca, the island of choice through the ages

Future property owners interested in culture, history, architecture and ancient cultures as well as those simply curious about the world will be fascinated by the Talayots on Menorca. The structures reflect both the customs and skills of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Balearic Islands and document the life of Menorca's first civilizations. The name "Talayot" infers to the tronco-conical stone towers from this period were probably used as lookout towers and communal dwellings. The Talayot settlements were always built in an elevated position to give better visual control of the surroundings allowing the inhabitants to react more quickly when enemies approached. They were also considered a symbol of the community of the people of Menorca. The talayots are usually in the shape of a truncated cone, built from huge stones using cyclopean techniques.

The talayots can be classified into three different classifications: taulas, navetas and burial chambers. Taulas were shrines mainly used for celebrating rituals and animal sacrifices, while the navetas were collective graves. Isolated burial chambers, necropolis, in the form of burial caves and burial sites are found in various ravines and among the cliffs and are much more difficult to reach than the taulas and navetas.
