Banyoles is located in the north-eastern corner of Catalonia and is the capital of the Pla de l'Estany region. It is halfway between the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, forming a triangle of communities and places of great historical and scenic interest. It is 120 km from Barcelona and 49 km from the border with France. The city extends to the east bank of the lake that bears the same name, at 175 m above sea level.

The town’s unique surrounding geographical features have created a great microclimate in Banyoles: the Rocacorba mountain range protects it from the humid southwestern winds, the Mare de Déu del Mont shelters it from the northwest and the regional plain compensates and softens the weather.

According to several university studies, the municipality of Banyoles has the highest standard of living in Catalonia, and the seventh in Spain. Factors such as consumer spend, social services, housing, transport, the environment, the labour market, health, culture and leisure, education and security were the basis for these studies.

Besides the city of Banyoles, the municipal area includes other districts: Mas Usall, Arcades, Guèmol, Lyon, Mas Riera, Pla de l'Ametller and Puigpalter, among others. The C-66 road runs south east to north west, from the Baix Empordà, passing through the east of the city of Banyoles towards Besalú. There is a network of local roads that unite the different population centres of the municipality with the neighbouring towns. Girona, the provincial capital, is at a distance of 16 km, and has the AVE High-Speed rail station, the airport and the main connection with France, the AP-7.
