Tabarca is the only inhabited island of Valencia and is located opposite the city of Alicante, and eleven nautical miles off Cape Santa Pola. In fact rather than an island, it is a small archipelago, consisting apart from Tabarca, the islets La Cantera, La Galera and Nao.Posee an approximate length of 1,800 meters and a maximum width of 400 meters.
Its shores in the past housed a shelter for pirates. In the eighteenth century, Carlos III ordered to fortify it and lift it a town in which to house several families of fishermen of Genoa who were captive in the Tunisian city of Tabarka. The walls surrounding the town have been declared a Historical and Cultural Interest.
ORGANIZING THE VISIT TO TABARCA
The typical visit is usually a day. There are multiple outlets, with more or less regularly depending on the season, from the port of Alicante in a comfortable promenade of about one hour. It can also be reached from Santa Pola, or Benidorm. Once on the island, visitors can enjoy coves and beaches with clear waters and a picturesque fishing port, with excellent options, with the possibility to taste the traditional pot, the dish of the island. It is recommended to walk through the town and visit the museum of the island. Visitors can stay on the island itself due to the opening of accommodation facilities in recent years.
