Conil de la Frontera (a white and blue pearl off the coast of Cádiz)
Conil de la Frontera is one of the most picturesque fishing villages on the Costa de la Luz and was founded by the Phoenicians; the Tartessos, the Romans, the Muslims passed through Conil and it was finally reconquered, leaving all of these towns their vestiges that remained in the form of castles, churches, towers and many customs, as well as internationally recognized gastronomy.
The town is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and is located just 43 kilometres from Cádiz capital and belongs to the region of La Janda, very close to the beautiful white villages of Vejer, Benalup and Medina Sidonia.
The streets of its historic centre have a typical sailor flavour, with its white houses, narrow whitewashed streets decorated by bougainvillaeas and geraniums, it breathes a Muslim past.
Its typical Andalusian patios, where one can take the cool during the hot summer, have Roman and Arab origin, in both cultures, the intimacy of family life was taken care of when developing the houses around it.
In its squares, you can experience the village atmosphere and in its fishing district, we find some of the most interesting restaurants.
The Conil’s and Zahara’s traps were the most important and the most famous not only in the peninsula but throughout Europe.
The wealth that tuna fishing generated was the origin of the medieval settlement of Conil and the trap was the true gold of the 16th century.
