Only 30 kms from Seville, and on the last important height of the Alcores, dominating the long Vega del Corbónes, is the city of Carmona.
The Guadalquivir runs today about 15 km northeast of Carmona. La Vega de Carmona is a plain limited by the rivers Corbonés, to the northeast, and Guadaíra, to the southwest.
The fertility of the area and the easy defense of the head on which the city sits, made Carmona one of the most important population centers of all time.
Its origins go back to the Neolithic, having been found in its surroundings rich prehistoric deposits.
Iberian city - one of its kings had a very active participation in the Second Punic War (218-202 BCE) -, was intensely Romanized, getting to have the privilege of coin minting.
The most notable Roman monument - unique in its kind - is the Necropolis.
Carmona retained its importance during the Muslim period. It even became, during the first kingdoms of Taifa, capital of one of them.
