In the V century. C. was founded the Iberian city of Ilici. With the arrival of the Romans, a process of forming a colony populated by veterans of the Cantabrian Wars, which would be renamed Colonia Iulia Augusta Illici, around the year 26 it was developed. C. Under Muslim rule in the Middle Ages, the city was established in its present location. Following the Christian Reconquest, around 1250, the city passed to the Crown of Castile.
