Home library ideas

A reading room or library is not only suitable for large estates or castles, as is often suggested in movies. Quite the contrary: A reading corner or reading room can also easily be integrated in your own four walls. Unused rooms such as the basement are ideal for this. Would you like a home library that matches your style and home perfectly? Here are a few home library ideas you can use.

Urban chic in the reading room

Set up a reading room in your basement in modern urban style. Imagine a sanded, polished and sealed concrete floor. Your books can be placed on metal shelves, where they stand out nicely and provide a pleasant contrast to the raw materials. Use ceiling spots for indirect lighting and add a lamp especially for reading.

The centrepiece of such an urban library is the seating. Use a comfortable sofa or a wing chair in a striking colour. Choose colour-matched accessories such as vases, cushions, carpets and wall decorations. If lighting conditions permit, you could also keep plants in your reading room.

Classic timelessness in the library

Certain items and furnishings have a timeless design that never goes out of fashion. When setting up your library, you could also use a classic design. Make your dream come true and start with a fine wooden floor that matches the colour of the rest of your house and blends well with the furniture you use. For example, a dark walnut that goes well with dark green furniture. Or how about a fir green baroque-style wing chair? This could be supplemented by a matching two-seater and coffee table, which would allow you to also welcome guests in your library.

There are many different ways to arrange your books. The best way to integrate them in your home library ideas  would be on a bookshelf in an appropriate wood tone. There are two types of bookshelves: those with doors and those without. The lighting should not be too bright. Install a number of indirect light sources such as floor lamps and shelf luminaires or a discreet ceiling lamp.

Monochrome reading paradise

If setting up a library in the basement, you could also use simple black and white tones. The books would then provide the colour accents. Choose suitable flooring consisting of black, white or mixed floor tiles. You need not restrict yourself to a checkered design, you could also use stripes instead. Keep in mind that your library might appear somewhat bland due to the subdued colour scheme. That is why you need to integrate plenty of fabrics to make the space more cosy. Use carpets, blankets, cushions and upholstery for this purpose.

Even if you are using a monochrome design, you will still need a comfortable reading space for enjoying your favourite novel – be it a work by the Nobel laureate for literature Kazuo Ishiguro or a timeless classic by Jane Austin. Use a reading lamp to optimise the lighting conditions and keep your eyes healthy in the long term.

No matter what design you choose, the most important thing is to use interior furnishings for your library that match your style and home. After all, your library should be a place of retreat.
