How to stage your home to its best advantage in winter

With darker evenings and stormy weather, winter may not immediately feel like the best time to be trying to show off your home in all its glory for a potential sale. However, the season gives you the perfect opportunity to showcase parts of your home that might be overlooked in summer, and to stage a delightful indoor space for visitors. Here are our winter staging tips.

- Selling your home this winter? Here are our top seasonal staging tips for a cosy and appealing property.

The living space

When selling your home in winter you’re searching for that cosy hygge feel – or its new Swedish sister lagom. For evening house viewings, have the fire alight if you have one and draw the curtains. Don’t forget to add a few plush throws and rugs if they don’t already have a spot in your winter décor. Seasonal decorations can add a welcoming feel to your home, and help prospective buyers envisage their first holiday season there. Try not to go overboard, though; a few simple touches, like a wreath and some warm-hued lights, go a long way.

The bedrooms and bathrooms

For bathrooms, winter is the best season to show off how warm and modern they can be. If you have heated towel rails and under-floor heating, why not have them on when prospective buyers are round? It’s also a great time to stage an extra throw and cosy bed linen in your bedroom, as well as some low lighting, a deep-pile rug, and perhaps a candle or too. You want to really emphasise how comfortable the most private areas of your home can be.

Your home’s USPs

Your home’s unique features can come into their own over winter. If you have a sauna or hot tub, these already speak for themselves. A home gym will also look attractive in the winter, when running outdoors may not be as appealing to potential owners.

A winter garden, covered balcony or conservatory are all big pluses for buyers looking at homes in winter. Don’t forget to give these areas a bit of extra sparkle, with soft furnishings, gentle lighting and perhaps some indoor plants; there’s nothing more attractive in winter than the thought of being able to get outdoors while staying warm. If you have a nook, window seat or study, make that look extra charming with soft, seasonally coloured blankets, some low lighting and a few well-positioned books to help with the atmosphere.

Outdoor features

Just because it’s frosty or a little bit bleak outside, your outdoor space shouldn’t take a backseat. Garages and sheds are especially attractive to buyers at this time of year, as everyone is especially aware of needing to protect their car or garden tools from the weather.

If you don’t already have some, you should consider outdoor lighting for winter viewings; any afternoon or evening visitors will immediately see the benefit to a lit driveway or garden path. A few choice tree lights or lights around the doorway can also add a cosy glow. It’s good to keep your garden tidy in winter too, with plants neatly trimmed and large piles of leaves or mulch disposed of.

The key idea is to ensure all areas of the home are tidy and well-maintained, including outdoor areas, while also drawing your prospective buyers’ attention to the features that are at their best in winter – but which will add value to your property all year round.
