6 essential components of a blissful home yoga room

There are plentiful reasons to cultivate a yoga practice, from improving flexibility and posture to increasing mindfulness. However, it’s not always easy to fit in a daily visit to the studio. Creating a home yoga room gives you an outlet to work on your sun salutations and pranayama at any time of day. Here’s what to bear in mind as you design a harmonious space for yoga.

1. Location of your home yoga room

The first step is to choose a location. Whether it’s a small bedroom, sectioned-off corner of the living room, or converted home office, interior spaces should ideally be positioned away from highly trafficked areas of the home. Outdoor spaces are ideal for those who live in a balmy climate, as is any space with an abundance of natural lighting and outdoor views.

2. Décor

A home yoga room should reflect what feels intuitively good to you, so create a relaxing ambience with decorative touches like soft lamps or garlands of paper lanterns. Natural elements like seashells, crystals and stones can help you feel grounded and closer to nature. 4. Greenery

Enhance this sense of being in tune with the natural world by filling your home yoga room with splashes of greenery, from trailing vines to architectural succulents.

For hot yoga or Bikram sessions, you can combine the moisture-intensive effects of a humidifier with the temperature-raising impact of a powerful space heater. Ideally, you should be able to reach 40% humidity and 40 degrees Celsius for optimal Bikram conditions. Engineered wood or marley flooring will work best with the high humidity.

You can also acquire a set of yoga blocks to help you achieve postures in comfort, or a strap to assist you with flexibility by making many difficult postures more accessible. A full-size mirror is a must in your yoga space, allowing you to view and adjust postures as necessary.

If you find achieving total focus challenging in your solo practice, you could consider adding a set of Bluetooth speakers to your home yoga room so that you can follow a guided meditation or online class. You can also add to the auditory ambience by positioning a gong in the room or investing in Tibetan singing bowls to emit calming frequencies.
