Interior design for parents: furniture for kids that grows with them

One undeniable fact about children is that they grow unbelievably fast. Keeping up with constantly changing clothing and shoe sizes, as well as tastes and preferences, can be a rollercoaster. Specially designed ‘growing furniture’ that will see your child through more than one stage of their life can be helpful in keeping up with their growing needs. Here we explore some furniture for growing kids.

The cot

Your little one’s first cot will come with protective high sides to stop any rolling or escaping as your child gets older. They will quite soon outgrow the need for protective bars though, and many cots now come with removable bars so the cot can instantly transform into a young child’s bed.

The child’s bed

Often your cot can last for a surprisingly long time, as it transforms to a child’s bed and then thereafter into perhaps a garden seat, a bench in the hallway or even a desk if you get innovative with your upcycling. Lots of furniture for kids can now be reassembled in several different reincarnations, to make it more grown up each time, and you could repaint the frame of the bed every few years to avoid boredom and to match your child’s changing tastes.

If they really have outgrown their bed, it could become a day-bed style sofa, either in their room or the rest of the house, or it could be given a new lease of life as a reading seat on the porch or in the garden. Other creative companies producing furniture for kids have created beds which transform into a homework or craft desk, as well as beds which convert to a bunk bed, for baby number two, and then back to a single when they outgrow sharing a room.

The highchair

You might not automatically assume a highchair could be a piece of growing furniture, but many modern designs now allow for progressive removal of the initial safety features until their first feeding chair becomes a stool-style dinner chair for more grown-up mealtimes. Some modern cradle designs even tilt and transform into a highchair for once you’ve stopped breast or bottle feeding your infant.

The changing tray

Who would have thought you could reuse a changing tray? The handy drawers under your child’s changing tray, which once held nappies and wet wipes, can often be reused as wall-mounted shelves, catering to your child’s growing collection of possessions. Sleek changing-table designs may also be reusable as, or convert into, a first desk for your little one.

The desk

If you haven’t created your child’s first desk from their former bed, you should consider a first desk that will grow with your child. A simple way to help it conform to your kid’s ever-changing favourite colour and theme, is to keep decorating the desk – perhaps for the start of a school year or in time for a birthday surprise. Some desks have the option of becoming taller to accommodate your child’s ever-growing legs, while many modern chair designs allow for little ones’ armrests to be removed for a more grown-up seat.
