Keys to having an open-plan kitchen

The space-saving "kitchenette" apartment has evolved into a living space where the kitchen gains space for the living room and also seeks to be the centre of the social life for its tenants. An open-plan kitchen makes it easier for food and drinks to be served, however, in order to achieve such a kitchen that's fully integrated in a home and multifunctional at the same time, it is necessary to observe a series of tips.

How to share the living room and kitchen

An essential aspect to create a sense of homogeneity between the living room and the kitchen is that the two areas share the same shape in terms of surface. This means, if the dining room is rectangular, its union with the kitchen should follow that form without including columns or of course partitions.

Adapting to open-plan kitchen through remodelling

For those homeowners who opt for the open-plan kitchen but have a classic home where the kitchen is separated from the rest of the house by walls, the best solution can be to knock down the partition wall and join the two rooms together.

Remove visual separations

Generally, classic kitchens are usually designed with tiled flooring, while the living-dining room has laminate flooring. Even in joined-up rooms, this change in the materials can give the impression that there is a physical separation between both spaces.

However, do not be naive: spilling oils, food and liquids in general in the kitchen can damage the floor so there is no other option but to put protective mats in areas that are at greater risk of damaging the floor or choose laminate and tiles in the same colour to visually minimise the contrast.

The kitchen islands and their functionality

What is a kitchen? A room or furniture? In the case of open-plan kitchens, it's more part of the room's furniture and, in this case, the well-known island. This complete furniture can include the ceramic hob, taps, and everything you need to be able to eat on it. This flexibility allows you to create a kitchen anywhere, even in a room that's not originally intended to perform that function, but thanks to the finishes and ranges in design, you can create many elegant and subtle environments.

Kitchens that communicate upwards

In two-storey houses like chalets, another option of open-plan kitchens is to grant space from the top. The useful space does not change or increase, but the feeling of spaciousness and, depending on how you play with light, achieve a more attractive visual impact.
