New rules for the self-employed

More than 3,100,000 self-employed workers and a similar number of unemployed people have been waiting for a series of new measures that make the RETA more flexible, increase the number of affiliates and reactivate the Spanish economy a little more. To achieve this, twenty measures have been approved for the self-employed, some of them already in force, and others to be approved by January 2018.

Taxes and charges

A long-awaited measure was to be able to make it easier for the self-employed to lodge their tax returns during the year. As of 2018, workers can file for their tax returns up to three times annually, and only the fee for the days of discharge will be paid.

In addition, the self-employed will be able to change the contribution base up to four times, continue as self-employed and collect 100% of their pension if they have at least one employee, and decrease their tax liability penalty from 20% to 10% during the first month by non-payment of the fee.

Family packages

The new measures also work in the favour of those with families. The first and most outstanding of these is the 100% bonus on the contribution base for maternity / paternity leave, adoption and fostering, care for the elderly or problems during pregnancy.

Another very important measure is the flat rate of 50 euros applied to mothers who return to work sooner than the two years of having left work and their loss of earnings was due to: maternity, adoption, etc.

Hiring relatives

A series of facilities is established, such as the 100% bonus for one year of the common contingencies if second degree family members are hired, including the spouse. In order to qualify for these measures, it is necessary that the contracted workers do not lose their jobs for a minimum of six months and that those same workers have not been hired previously.

Security and training

For the self-employed who want to continue training, they can do so by accessing a type of training adapted to their business. At the same time, part of this training will be focused on the prevention of occupational hazards and the "itinere accident" (accident that occurs between the self-employed person's work place and home) is accepted as a cause of dismissal or job loss.

Finally, we want to strengthen the corporate cohesion of the self-employed by facilitating that the organisations representing them become "public utility" and can be part of the Economic and Social Council and the Autonomous Work Council.
