Valencia's wine route: Utiel- Requena

The Utiel Requena Wine Route is located within the province of Valencia. It is an area full of special, authentic charm, just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea.

Geographic situation

On the border with Castilla la Mancha, the geographical area where this route is located at is of great interest. It is 50 kilometres away from Valencia and three hours from Madrid via the A-3 motorway. Likewise, it enjoys excellent rail connections with train stations such as Utiel, Requena and Camporrobles.

The municipalities that the Utiel-Requena Route pass through are Camporrobles, Caudete de las Fuentes, Chera, Fuenterrobles, Requena, Sinarcas, Utiel, Venta del Moro and Villargordo del Cabriel. It is a perfectly delimited area, characterised by having wine as its main source of income. The gastronomic and cultural offerings are some of its great tourist attractions.

The vineyards that comprise the Utiel-Requena Wine Route are of more than 40,000 hectares, forming the largest wine-producing area in the Valencian community.

Activities to take part in

Which activities can be enjoyed on the Utiel-Requena Route? There is plenty to do: from tasting the exquisite wines of the area, going on guided cultural tours, eating at the numerous restaurants to taking part in sports and adventure activities, such as canyoning, trekking in Hoces del Cabriel, rafting, and many others.

Varieties of grapes

Some of the varieties of red wines from the Utiel-Requena Route include Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir. In the case of white wines, you can find varieties such as Macabeo, Tardana, Planta Nova, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The most characteristic type of grape in the area is the Bobal variety, which occupies 80% of the vineyards and is considered the most noble of the D.O. It is a very suitable grape to produce wines of the highest category.

The Regulatory Council in the area is responsible for more than a hundred wineries. Thanks to the continuous quality controls and strict monitoring by inspectors, the highest quality wines are guaranteed.

The history of this wine route

This Utiel-Requena route is considered to be the oldest in Spain. It is believed that the Iberians in the fourth and fifth centuries BC were already practicing winemaking. Some of these historic sites can be seen today and are open to the public, such as "El Molón" in Camporrobles, or "Las Pilillas" in Requena.

The Utiel-Requena Wine Route Association was created in 1999 for the purpose of promoting tourism through the initiative of restaurants, wineries, museums, active tourism companies, entities and official bodies, etc.
