Your Guide on: How to Charter a Yacht
Engel & Völkers Yachting has a dynamic team of charter brokers specialized in exceeding the expectations of our clients and offering an exceptional quality of service that reflects our company’s professionalism. We‘re here to attend to all your needs when it comes to the extraordinary organization of your personally tailored luxury charter.
The first step in chartering, is contacting us. The second step is zooming in on the best yachts we have personally viewed, matching the right yacht to your requirements & expectations. Once we have found the perfect yacht for you, we then create the perfect itinerary for your yacht charter.
Whether you come to us with an idea of where you’d like to go or simply a dream of how you would like to experience a vacation, we can help you with both and more…beyond your imagination.
There are more details in organizing the perfect yacht charter, and we know that. From hand picking your yacht and crew to specifying the type of champagne or dietary juice you may prefer, Engel & Völkers Yachting can plan to perfection especially for you.
Here at Engel & Völkers Yachting, it’s our prerogative to make sure the yacht and crew our expert team chooses for you is of the highest standards. In fact, our charter brokers visit yacht shows the world over on a regular basis to make sure of this, inspecting the yachts, interviewing the crew and sampling the Chef’s delicacies to make sure of your utmost satisfaction.
There are many styles of yachts, modern and fast or more classical with a lower cruising speed (And fuel consumption!), motor, sailing or even a motor sailor, where you have the thrill of sailing but the spaciousness and comfort of a motor yacht.

The maximum number of guests allowed to cruise on a charter yacht is legally up to 12 guests, however some yachts have a larger capacity. Do make sure your broker knows how many guests you would like on board and the cabin configuration, (Doubles cabins/singles etc.). An idea of ages and any celebrations or events to be held will help with making the right choice.
All the yachts have a large array of water sport toys, but do let us know if there is anything in particular that you would like us to organise for you.
The charter fee is calculated on a weekly basis which includes the hire of the yacht, its crew and the Yachts’ insurance.
If you wish to charter for less than a week the price may be a slightly higher daily rate. Normally the Owner divides the weekly rate by five or six, then multiplying by the days you require, depending on the length of your charter. Engel & Völkers Yachting is happy to explain in detail all the fine elements related to payment, including VAT, APA, extra expenses, gratuity & delivery fees. Please contact us for more information.
Depending on your cruising requirements; yourself and your charter specialist will decide on the port of embarkation and disembarkation which will be stated on the charter contract. If there is a change of plan, no worries, an addendum to the contract will be drawn up.
Your itinerary is dependent on the speed of the yacht. We recommend between four to six hours cruising a day for your comfort and the crew’s efficiency. The Yacht can also do overnight crossings for longer distances travelled, but please consider that the crew are obliged to stay on 24 watch for this so may be less performant the next day if done regularly. We do recommend you do no more than one or two of these during a week’s charter.
Please also do state WELL in advance if you would like berths booked in the busy ports such as St Tropez, Capri, Ibiza as Yacht Berths are often very difficult to find in the high season. The same applies for popular restaurants and Clubs.

THE MYBA (West Mediterranean Yacht Broker’s Association) CONTRACT
Engel & Völkers Yachting operates under the MYBA contract which is a well thought out and respected contract which protects and clearly defines the rights and obligations of each party. In the USA, there are equivalent contracts being the AYCA CONTRACT (American Yacht Charter Association) and the FYBA CONTRACT (Florida Yacht Broker’s Association).
CANCELLATION & REFUND
We would like to point out to you that in the case you must cancel or curtail your cruise, the MYBA, AYCA, FYBA contracts do not include Cancellation and Curtailment insurance. We would recommend you secure such insurance and would be happy to recommend an insurance broker for you if you so require.
We would like to point out to you that Engel & Völkers Yachting is well experienced in dealing with celebrities and other high profile individuals and families. We understand how important it is to keep our client’s confidentiality safe.
HOW TO GO AHEAD
Once your charter specialist has assisted you in choosing the perfect yacht and cruising grounds for your charter we will draw up the charter contracts for your reviewal and signature. We then send this on to the Owner for his signature. Once the contract is fully signed we will ask you to send us 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. Receipt of these funds will confirm your charter.
One month prior to your embarkation we will need to receive the Balance of the charter fee, the TVA (if applicable) and the APA, along with the very important Provisioning Forms to send on to the yacht. Closer to the date we will also put you directly in touch with the Captain and the Chef for more detailed information and to create a rapport between you prior to embarkation.
