Sports and leisure

Whether on water or land, Rhodes and the whole Dodecanese offer a broad range of sports and leisure activities. Naturally, one of the most popular activities on the island is water sports. 39 beaches and bays of the Dodecanese have been awarded the Blue Flag for their high quality. Among most popular types of water sports are wind and kite surfing. Here, the eastern coast of Rhodes is best suited for beginners, while the western coast is recommended for advanced surfers due to the stronger winds. The beaches of Prasonisi on Rhodes and Marmari and Tingaki on Kos are particularly popular for this purpose. Furthermore, these beaches are suitable for parasailing, water skiing and jet skiing. The favourite beaches are those of Faliraki and Kiotari, as they are best suited for water sports activities. The bay of Lindos is also highly recommended for water skiing. Faliraki is also home to Europe’s largest water park (The Water Park). The range of family-friendly activities pulls in a lot of visitors. There are adventure playgrounds, a pool with obstacle course, a pirate ship and huge slides. Owing to the hidden archaeological findings, only a small number of diving sites are open to the public. Diving is mainly possible in Kalithea, in the bay of Ladiko and in Lindos. The impressive underwater world with its breathtaking fauna and flora is very popular. Compared to other Greek islands, Rhodes is a very green island. The different landscapes and outstanding nature tempt more and more people to discover the island and its secrets on foot. The areas around the Attaviros, in Epta Piges (Seven Springs) and in Butterfly Valley (Petaloudes) are very popular for hiking. The many bays around Rhodes make the Dodecanese one of Greece’s most beautiful sailing grounds. But apart from the twelve main islands, there are numerous smaller islands and bays that are also best discovered by sailing boat. The landing place is Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town. It is used by cruise ships, charter fleets and private yachts. The new marina on Kos was given a face lift in 2001 following investments of around 8 million euros. Rhodes is home to one of Greece’s give golf courses (Afandou Golf Course), which is located in the Afandou region, approximately 19 km from the capital. The golf club was designed by British architect Donald Harradine. The club is open all year round and, with its bar and restaurant, is an inviting venue for more than golf. Another popular sport on Rhodes is tennis. The Rhodes Tennis Club is located 3 km from the town centre. It was renovated in 2007 and comprises a total of eight tennis courts. Horse enthusiasts don’t need to miss out on horse-riding in Rhodes. Horseback riding tours and courses are offered in Pastida, Ialysos and Trianta, for example.
