Bowen Road is a 4.3km long Garden of Eden type passageway of discreet luxury real estate starting at Magazine Gap Mid Levels and ending up at the junction of Stubbs Road and Tai Hand Road.
A tiny neighbourhood halfway up towards Victoria Peak, Bowen Road is mostly referred to as the famous running or walking trail that offers a shady, paved and mostly level pedestrian trail with stunning views and scenery out over the city and Victoria Harbor. Having become Hong Kong’s most popular urban running and fitness trail, some say one of the most enjoyable in the world, this tranquil environment snakes through the heavy green foliage, and is easily accessible to everyone. Small or narrow cars can make the journey along Bowen Road albeit at a quiet pace, as parts of the road are extremely narrow going from dual to single lane at times less than 2 meters wide, however this only adds to the exclusivity of living in this neighbourhood where the air is fresh and pure, and the serenity and quiet is heavenly. Living here it’s too easy to forget you are living in the metropolis of Hong Kong.
Bowen Road is home to a very small elite mix of luxury apartment towers and the odd mansion. Regence Royal Towers, Fairland Tower, Po Kwong apartments and Bowens Lookout are some of the few residential buildings at the beginning of this trail with Road access, however further along, this becomes the mostly pedestrian trail, with the rare exception of encountering cars owned by the few residents who live off this road in private homes. Most of these homes and mansions are hidden from sight in the foliage with steps off Bowen Road leading up or down the hillside nestled in complete privacy and creating a very peaceful and private jungle oasis. And yet you are only 10 minutes from Central.
Some of the smart residents of the private homes use a golf buggy or motorised cart to ferry groceries and guests to and from their homes, which is actually quite a practical and easy solution for multiple trips thru the day. The use of inclinators is also popular from the street particularly if your residence is located on the upside. All of these things are well worth any effort for the lifestyle that can be attained and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has ever knocked back a dinner party invitation to a home on Bowen Road because of the access. And let’s not forget, the walk is very pleasurable too with well lit paths at night.
If you are fortunate enough to afford a house here, this is indeed what you must do although it may mean waiting some time for something to come up. Whether you rent or buy, be prepared to shell out a considerable amount to live in one of the worlds most exclusive areas. For others who prefer the convenience of an apartment located at the dual roadside of Bowen Road and on a bus or mini bus route, there are a few more choices. Here are listed a few of the apartment buildings that are definitely worth looking at for your future home.
Bowens Lookout - A single modern luxury high rise of 27 floors with only one magnificent apartment per floor was completed in 2004. There are 25 apartments of 1702 sf saleable and a duplex penthouse. The apartments are all 4 bedrooms with East facing balconies off the spacious living dining rooms. The views are nothing short of spectacular, with swimming pools, bbq areas, and playgrounds for children.
Fairlane Tower - This state of the art tower has 30 storeys with 82 apartments that range from 2 to 4 bedrooms, all furnished to the highest standards. High ceilings and large picture windows allow panoramic views from the higher floors. The flat sizes vary from 879-3467 sf saleable areas. The building has excellent resident facilities with clubhouse fitness gym, games room, golf driving range, squash court(s), and a large resort style outdoor swimming pool.
Regence Royale Towers - A modern high quality development completed in 2001 which consists of two 26 storey towers and a total of 103 luxury apartments. There are only 2 private apartments per floor and range in size from 1805-1933 sf saleable areas. Each apartment has floor to ceiling windows and most have knock-out views over Central and the harbour. Located at the start of the Bowen Road running trail, the towers have plenty of great facilities for residents including childrens playgrounds, gym and indoor swimming pool.
Po Kwong Apartments – This is a very well maintained older style low rise apartment block with plenty of character and street appeal which was solidly built in 1963 and is located at the start of the Bowen Road running trail. Very convenient with only 11 super large and spacious apartments with high ceilings, arranged over 6 floors. Many of these are now well renovated and offer luxurious designer interiors with loft style open plan living and very chic décor. They all have open views and some have large terraces and outdoor areas including rooftop. Great views from the top floors.
Bowen Road Fitness Centre and Tennis Courts - A total of four courts are available and can be booked by the general public with HKID card. The courts are in great condition and set amongst the lush greenery. There can't be many tennis courts in the world surrounded by jungle! Open during the daylight hours, Limited parking is available. Located close to the beginning of Bowen Road where the road is dual carriageway. From here on the road turns to single lane and is extremely narrow in places.
For families who live in this area, you are surrounded by an excellent choice of schools. Island International School, St Pauls College, Carmel School of Hong Kong, St Josephs School, Shrewsbury International, The French International School, The Peak School and many more covering kindergarten, junior and up to Senior level.
The Cannossa Hospital is a largely well regarded private hospital on the doorstep of Bowen Road with AE facilities and is favoured by ex pat families who live in the area. There are a number of other hospitals that are only a short drive away.
