‘Eat well to live well’ is the modern day mantra. This wellness concept is gaining much popularity in Hong Kong as people become more conscious about their food choices. As result, good quality, organic foods are becoming easier to find at the city’s growing number of organic food stores and markets.
Previously all organic produce and foods were imported into Hong Kong by well-known independent purveyors at prohibitive prices making them unaffordable for most folk. However, nowadays, organic food suppliers can source nutritious and wholesome organic fare from local Hong Kong-based farms itself. Most of these farms are located in areas like Tai Po, Fan Ling and Yuen Long in the New Territories.
The cultivating methods and practices followed at these farms are strictly regulated to conform to international organic standards. These local farms supply their fresh, organic produce to Hong Kong’s growing tribe of Farmers’ markets. Like in most farmers’ markets worldwide, the produce on offer at these markets is seasonal as the farms are small producers with limited capacities.
