Today we introduce you to the Tarot Garden, a real open-air museum located in the hilly landscape of Capalbio in Tuscan Maremma, a unique place with exceptional charm, and one of the most important examples of environmental art in Italy where its sculptures perfectly match nature.
The artist, Niki de Saint Phalle, dedicated herself to the creation of the garden from 1979 until its opening on May 15, 1998. It is indeed her greatest masterpiece, including cyclopean sculptures from 12 to 15 meters high, all representing tarot symbols with 22 major arcana of the tarot.
We can say that Niki de Saint Phalle managed to make her dream come true by being completely absorbed in her art to the point of "living" within their works. The garden is an unconventional place where you lose yourself in the beauty of the landscape and in the colors of the sculptures.
The artist lived inside the garden, throughout the time of its creation, exactly inside the building of the empress. Even today the furniture is an integral part of the huge sculpture, a colorful apartment in which shapes and colors blend with the surrounding environment.
Why did she choose the tarot cards? Tarot cards are divination cards. Reading the Major Arcana can allow you to discover some details about your life and personality. They can read the present and predict the future. If you are looking for answers, start your inner journey right from the entrance wall which deliberately separates the garden from the rest of the world. The outside and the inside. Let yourself be guided by instinct and you will find your Arcane guide. The messages you will find on the paths leading to the figures will help you locate it.
This is just one of the wonderful corners hidden in Tuscan Maremma.
