Wine routes
The wine routes are touristic itineraries located within wine production areas. These routes aim to promote the italian territory with natural, cultural and environmental activities, by bringing visitors directly to the vineyards, farms and cellars.
In Maremma there are 3 wine routes: Colli di Maremma Wine and Flavors Route, Monteregio di Massa Marittima Wine and Flavors Route, Montecucco Wine and Amiata Flavors Route. Today these places are well known and appreciated at an international level.
Tuscany Maremma is a land with a very ancient wine tradition like the Morellino di Scansano wine, the Pitigliano wine, the Argenatrio wine and the Sovana wine.
Morellino di Scansano is one of the wines best known internationally, recognized as DOC in 1978 and later DOCG in 2007: the name refers to the Morellino grapes in the province of Grosseto. The climate is one of the key factors for the production of this wine: the weather is typical Mediterranean, since the sea is very close and characterized by hot and sunny summers - perfect for the ripening of the grapes - and very rainy autumns and springs.
This wine has a fruity, fresh and decisive flavor, characterized by a pleasant balance on the palate. It is very versatile in food-wine combinations and offers, at the same time, a well-defined character and elegance.
The White wine from Pitigliano is produced on an area that goes from Lazio to Pitigliano. The final product is a complex combination of different types of grapes: Trebbiano Toscano, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Pinot Bianco.
It is often recommended to drink this one within the year of the harvest. The color is straw yellow with greenish reflections, while the flavor is delicate and fresh, the aroma is clean and decisive. The taste is dry and delicate, with a distinct aftertaste. It is often served with appetizers and simple dishes.
The Ansonica wine is a light and dry wine produced in the Argentario area, near Orbetello, Capalbio and Manciano. In 1995 it won the DOC title. The color is straw yellow, while the scent is slightly fruity and the flavor is dry but soft, lively and harmonious.
The Sovana DOC wine is produced from different varieties of grapes like the Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo and Merlot. This wine takes its name from the locality of Sovana, an ancient Etruscan city. However, the production area is shared with some of the wines mentioned above as the Pitigliano.
