It was recently reported that the city of Ascoli Piceno has presented its candidacy for Italian Capital of Culture 2024 and the Marche Region, in the persons of the President Francesco Acquaroli and the Councilor for Culture Giorgia Latini, is very glad to support its candidacy.
A lot has been written about the plural name of Le Marche region to highlight the fact that it is the perfect set of different territories, different cultures, different stories of which Ascoli Piceno and its surroundings are one of the jewels in the crown. The millennial history of Ascoli Piceno and the perfect blend of art, culture, architecture and food and wine tradition of this area are of value for making Italy one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
The mountain scene of Ascoli Piceno boasts a large number of beautiful localities, such as the Sibillini Mountains with its highest peak, Monte Vettore (2476 m) and partly the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.
The typical wine and food specialties are olive all’ascolana and the Rosso Piceno Superiore wine, whose production area is exclusive to the province and has its heart in the northern ridge of the middle and lower Tronto valley. This ridge is crossed by the homonymous Rosso Piceno Superiore road (SP 1) which connects Offida to San Benedetto through the municipalities of Ripatransone and Acquaviva Picena.
Riviera delle Palme is a tourist area along the Marche coast and extends from Cupra Marittima to the mouth of the Tronto river, passing through Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto, the first city in the province by population with its fishing port, one of the most famous on the Adriatic Riviera. Two other places which are worth seeing in the area are the coastal town of Marina di Massignano, and the old town centre of Ascoli Piceno with its splendid Piazza del Popolo.
