Capriolo

Southeast of Lake Iseo, and surrounded by the idyllic farmland and vineyards of Lombardy, is the medieval town of Capriolo. Located in northern Italy between the river Oglio and Mount Alto this historic locale is situated in Franciacorta, a region famous for the quality of its wine and Italian champagne. With beautiful countryside as far as they eye can see, Capriolo has the famed Lake Iseo less than 10 minutes away to its north. Well served by the A4 motorway the town is ideally located, allowing easy access to several cities. Milan with its two international airports is only an hour’s drive west, and the nearby cities of Bergamo and Brescia are less than 30 minutes away.

Capriolo is a historic town with records that date back to 879A.D; nevertheless it is full of modern conveniences. Supermarkets like Conad Superstore, Eurospin, and Italmark provide most day-to-day necessities. While specialty facilities like optometrists, veterinarians, auto-repair, health food, and even a music school ensure residents can meet most of their needs without traveling far. Capriolo also offers essential service such as banks, private and public schools, a library, police station, pharmacy, hospital, and even charging stations for hybrid and electric cars. Soccer pitches, tennis courts and sports grounds are also easily accessible. For travel outside of the town, the LS001, LS003, and LS025 bus routes connect Capriolo and allow for quick visits to Franciacorta’s many beautiful historic towns such as Paratico and Iseo, as well as the city of Brescia.

The homes of Capriolo are a reflection of the town’s artistic history during the renaissance and late-baroque period. Traditional brick and mortar buildings dot the town, as do old churches and gorgeous cobblestone streets that keep motorized traffic to a minimum. Small cafes, ice-cream parlours, and general shops give Capriolo a sense of pleasant familiarity. Modern residential and commercial buildings fit seamlessly into the townscape’s older architecture. Further accentuating the traditional image of Capriolo are contemporary establishments that emulate the classic Italian style. The abundance of trees, flowers, and hedges are carefully distributed around the town, giving it a natural sense of greenery with each idyllic stroll through its many broad and winding paths.

The strategic location of the town of Capriolo has played an important part in the region of Franciacorta. Steeped in history, Capriolo is home to an enduring castle built in the 10th century by the Lantieri, an old prominent Italian family. The striking castle was eventually converted into a monastery now known as the Monastero Suore Orsoline. Nearby the monastery stands an impressive postal office and the Chiesa Di San Giorgio, a gorgeous church with an iconic clock tower. Capriolo also holds the Sagra di San Giorgio which is a time-honoured festival held annually on April 23rd in celebration of the town’s patron Saint, George the dragon slayer.

Capriolo is a charming Italian town which demonstrates effortlessly that comfort and luxury are not exclusive to modern high-rises and chic apartments. Full of enchanting streets, stunning architecture, and old-world charm, Capriolo manages to seamlessly offer convenient services and local Italian allure, all within one of Lombardy’s most sought-after residential areas.
