Spring 2022: what can you do on Lake Maggiore?

Summer brings an explosion of colours to the Lake Maggiore area. A visit to the most beautiful Gardens is a must and there are many events not to be missed.

An exclusive tourist destination since the nineteenth century, the Lake Maggiore offers many opportunities to spend unforgettable days, visiting its jewels and enjoying the beauty of the environment. If you're wondering what you can do on Lake Maggiore in spring 2022, here are some ideas for your stay.

Stresa and the Borromean Islands

The first must-see destination for anyone planning to spend a few days on Lake Maggiore is the Borromean Islands. Spring is really the perfect season for a trip to Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. Isola Madre offers many gardens with lots of species of plants and flowers, including many colourful, rare and exotic plants. A visit to Palazzo Borromeo and to the streets of Isola dei Pescatori complete the tour, before returning to Stresa. The queen of Lake Maggiore is truly a unique town, divided between the lake and the surrounding nature, perfect for a romantic stay or a family trip into nature.

The beaches of Lake Maggiore

Even if it is not yet summer, on a sunny day you can enjoy the mild climate of Lake Maggiore from one of its beautiful beaches. From Canobbio in the north, to Dormelletto in the south, the lake's shores are full of free beaches. Alternatively, there are a number of well-equipped establishments where, in addition to the beauty of the lake, an all-round welcoming service is offered: from Stresa to Baveno, from Intra to Meina and even in Arona, there is no shortage of campsites and hotels with access to the lake for your relaxing stay.

Villa Taranto, a Scottish dream

Answering the question what to do on Lake Maggiore in spring 2022 can be very easy. For example, a visit to Villa Taranto in Verbania is a must. Its uniqueness is due to the creativity of a Scottish captain named Neil Mc Eacharn, who bought this villa in the 1930s and wanted to rebuild a wonderful example of an English garden here. Today the park of over 16 hectares is home to around 20,000 botanical species with some very rare varieties.

The Museo del Paesaggio in Verbania

Founded in 1909 by Professor Antonio Massara, the Museo del Paesaggio is one of Verbania's most important cultural centres. Located in Palazzo Viani Dugnani, it is divided into five sections devoted to painting, sculpture, the Troubetzkoy gallery of plaster casts, archaeology and photography. A visit to this collection is a must. It is also a mandatory part of a cultural stay in the Lake Maggiore area.

Events around the lake

The pandemic has unfortunately limited the organisation of events everywhere, and it is hoped that normality will return to this area in the coming months. Several events traditionally offer ideas and things to do on Lake Maggiore, such as the Spring Camellia Exhibition, or the "Editoria e Giardini" event, the only one dedicated exclusively to publishings on the theme of gardens and botany, both in Verbania.

Rocca Borromea and the Museo della Bambola (Doll Museum)

Another must-see on the shores of Lake Maggiore is the Rocca di Angera, which dominates most of the southern shores of the lake. Since 1988, it has been home to the Museo della Bambola, the only one of its kind in Italy and one of the most important in Europe.

Lake Mergozzo

When you're deciding what to do on Lake Maggiore, one solution may be to discover new places. Lake Mergozzo is located near Verbania and the village of Mergozzo is a picturesque village overlooking the Lake. An oasis of peace and quiet that from spring onwards is popular with both tourists and local residents.

Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso

This monastery, another unique corner in the landscape of Lake Maggiore, overhangs the water and is located on the eastern shore of the Lake. Built to be as inaccessible as possible, today it can be visited by climbing about 300 steps, or by taking a lift dug into the rock. A connection by lake from Stresa is also usually organised.

Trekking for everyone

The particular geographical conformation of the Lake Maggiore area offers many opportunities for walks in nature. There are many ring itineraries that allow you not to take the car. At the centre there is the Mottarone Park, which in the spring season offers truly stunning views and paths. From its peaks, the view extends from the Maritime Alps to Monviso. Absolutely not to be missed.
