Varese is a city province located at 50 km North of Milan. It lies at the foot of Sacro Monte di Varese, which is part of the Campo dei Fiori mountain chain, but also looks over its lake, Lake Varese. It has a high foreigner population thanks to its economy (presence of many multi-national companies and the nearby EU institution at JRC) and its location (proximity to Milan, Malpensa airport and Switzerland).The city is served by both the state-run Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) and Ferrovie Nord Milano (Trenord), both running high-frequency trains to Milan. In addition, there is a railway and bus connection with Malpensa Airport; this line will be extended to Mendrisio and Lugano in Switzerland. The A8 highway, the first toll road system in Italy and in the world, connects Varese to Milan. Lake Maggiore is reachable in 20 minutes driving.
