The city of Cuneo was born at the confluence of the Stura and Gesso rivers, on a "cùneo" whose characteristic shape inspired its name. The presence of the streams has allowed the creation of a large city river park, called the Gesso and Stura River Park.
The city is defined as the "Green Capital of Piedmont".
The historic center is characterized by a checkerboard layout which, starting from the apex of the cùneo imaginary, flows along a median street that leads to the wide Piazza Galimberti. The arcaded paths, about 8 km long, play an important role in the life of the city, because they connect the main streets to each other and allow walking, even on days with adverse weather conditions. They are of great structural and compositional variety.
The most characteristic and important streets of the city are:
• Contrada Mondovì: very characteristic in the historic center, narrow, with arcades.
• Corso Nizza: 1.5 km long course, the commercial hub of the city. It should be noted that the course was named after Nice, at the time an Italian city.
• Via Roma: the main pedestrian artery of the historic Cuneo, completely arcaded and with a characteristic curvilinear course.
• Viale degli Angeli: over 2 km long, of remarkable beauty, flanked by numerous trees, it connects the city to the Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli.
Cuneo is also famous for its dessert, the Cuneese al rum, born in 1923 and protected by the patent for a trademark by the same inventor. This large chocolate is made up of 2 meringue wafers that contain a dark chocolate and rum cream, all covered with a layer of dark chocolate.
