The square is dedicated to Benedetto Cairoli (1825-1889), a great fighter in the Five Days of Milan, but also to Custoza, Varese, Calatafimi, Mentana and assistant to Giuseppe Garibaldi in the Expedition of the Thousand. After his military life ceased, he was a deputy of Pavia for 30 years, then elected Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture.
