Vipiteno with its 6500 inhabitants is not only the northernmost city of Italy, but also one of the most beautiful small towns. It combines medieval flair with modern charm and is characterized by a central european climate. Vipiteno was founded in the prehistoric period of 14 B.C. under the roman general Drusus as a roman settlement and has always been regarded as a lively trading place - above all because of its strategically good location between the Alpine crossings of the Pass of Monte Giovo, the Brennero Pass and the Pass of Penne. Vipiteno was also an important mining centre, which brought much wealth to the town. Especially in the "New Town", which is already 500 years old, you can admire magnificent houses with oriels, stepped gables, artistic signs and arcades. The attractive small old town consists essentially only of a central street. Where transit traffic used to pass through the Brennero Pass and the roman-german emperors went via the Brennero Pass to Rome for the coronation, today small shops, renowned boutiques, cosy cafés and well-stocked wine shops line up and invite you to stroll and enjoy. But also outside the centre Vipiteno has a lot to offer. Sports enthusiasts are drawn to the leisure mountain Monte Cavallo, which is only a few minutes walk from the centre and offers a wonderful hiking area and varied ski slopes.
