Fontanile is an enchanting village in the Alto Monferrato, dominated by the grandiose dome which makes it visible even in the distance. Pride of the town, the dome characterizes the beautiful Church of San Giovanni Battista, built at the end of the 19th century on a project by the architect Gualandi commissioned by the parish priest Monsignor Soave. The name "Fontanile" indicates the main characteristic of the area, the numerous spring waters that once fed the Rio Cervino and even formed a lake. The housing nucleus originated around the 4th-5th century AD, when the barbarian invasions forced the people of the valley bottom to move to higher and better defensible places.
The remains of the circular ramparts of the ancient Castle are still present in the center of the town, along the main road, confirming the important role played by the Marquisate of Fontanile in the Acquese area. A really characteristic note: the history of the town is told, through suggestive murals, along the fortress wall, on the facades of the houses, on the gates, transformed into canvases on which to represent the past, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Immersed in the vineyards and in the gentle Monferrato hills that leave you speechless, it is surrounded by the most beautiful towns and villages of the Upper Monferrato: Nizza Monferrato, Alice Bel Colle, Castel Boglione, Castel Rocchero, Castelletto Molina, Mombaruzzo, Quaranti.
