Gallarate rises in the plain of the Basso Varesotto and has the morainic hills of Crenna and Cajello behind it. It borders the municipalities of: Cavaria, Cassano Magnago, Busto Arsizio, Samarate, Cardano al Campo, Arsago Seprio, Besnate and tends to cohabit with some of them and to constitute a unitary nucleus with the other centers of the Alto Milanese up to Legnano and beyond . The municipality belongs to the Parco Lombardo del Ticino although it is not surrounded by the waters of the Azzurro River. Gallarate is an industrial center active in every sector. Large industries, small and medium-sized enterprises and artisan businesses contribute to giving variety to the productive life of the city. The traditionally very lively trade has taken on new vigor thanks to its proximity to Malpensa Airport.
At the end of the 13th century it became the capital of the Seprio region, a historic region of Lombardy between the current provinces of Varese and Como. Even from those years he began to distinguish himself as a lively commercial center in the upper Milan area even during the dominations he lived with the entire State of Milan.
In 1860 Gallarate was awarded the title of City and in the following years it grew larger absorbing some neighboring municipalities. In 1927 the city became the province of Varese following the suppression of the district of Gallarate.
