Arcevia is one of the most important towns of the Ancona's hinterland because of its history and monuments. Built on the slopes of the Cischiano Mount, in a unique panoramic position, between the Apennine Mountains and the rolling hills that slope towards the sea, the city is surrounded by greenery and in contact with nature, enjoying a mild climate and healthy air that have always made it a privileged place for summer stay.
The medieval urban structure is of great charm and, together with the surroundings in which we can find 9 castles dating back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it evokes an aura of mystery that keeps being alive over time.
The name Arcevia derives from the Latin noun arces via, that means fortified place and was attributed by Pope Pio VII with an apostolic letter dated 16.09.1817. In medieval times, it was called "Rocca Contrada", probably from the name Contrado - perhaps from the Germanic "Konrad" - a gentleman that has owned the Castle of Arcevia in the past times.
The historical heritage of the village is also testified by a document that shows the inscription of an ancient tombstone with the following content: "The Senoni Gauls have founded and called me Arcevia, the Lombards have owned me, the Gallic King (Pepin the Brief) has increased and held me, the son who is emperor (Charlemagne) has given me to the Pope ".
In the surroundings we find the cities of Senigallia and Ancona, the capital town of the Le Marche Region, as well as the airport of Falconara Marittima.
