The lake of Lugano, also known as Ceresio, is a branched pre-Alpine lake along the Swiss-Italian border and extends between the canton of Ticino, the Province of Como and the Province of Varese. The north-eastern part (with the town of Porlezza and Valsolda, both in the province of Como) belongs to Italiy, whereas the stretch in the south-west coast with Porto Ceresio(in the province of Varese) belongs to Switzerland. The town of Campione d’Italia with its particular position represents the historic Italian enclave surrounded by Swiss territory. To Switzerland belongs the most extensive and central basin, with Lugano city and the center of Morcote.
The lake has an area of ​​48.7 km ², about 18 km ² of which belonging to Italy and has a curiously intricate shape. Excavated within the circle of the Lombard Prealps, mirrors more or less the same scenery of the lake Como, although it is about three times smaller. The banks, still relatively green in the northern sector, have been affected by the massive presence of modern buildings, which have altered the traditional architecture. Valsolda was the setting of the famuos novel of Antonio Fogazzaro, Piccolo mondo antico.
