The ancient Palazzo del Podestà dates back to the early 14th century and is located in the centre of the historic village of Buonconvento, on the Via Francigena. On the façade are still visible 25 crests of the ancient Podestàs who inhabited the palace. The right side is embellished by the fascinating Civic Tower, owned by the municipality. From the entrance, a staircase leads to a large hallway that divides the first floor into two parts: the west wing, enhanced by the spacious kitchen with the imposing fireplace, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a closet; and the east wing, where we find a large room with a fireplace and two large windows overlooking the Via Francigena, two double bedrooms and a bathroom also accessible from the other wing of the Palace. Going up the characteristic central staircase, you reach the second floor, which leads us into a double bedroom with adjacent kitchenette and another room to use as a study or as an additional bedroom. On this floor, there are two portions of the attic, whose practicable areas can be used as closets or laundry area. In the east wing of the second floor there is access to a further apartment, which has an entrance on the main street and is composed as follows: entrance hall, kitchen, small bathroom and two bedrooms. On the third floor, there is a large attic with a view of the rooftops, where it is possible to create an exclusive environment. As per the existing project, it is possible to build 4 to 5 apartments to create an accommodation facility. Some historical documents report that in 1313 the emperor Henry VII of Luxembourg died of malaria in this building. He was invoked by Dante Alighieri as saviour of Italy in the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines in a letter addressed to the sovereign, as the plaque in the facade of the Palace recalls, and mentioned several times by the great poet in the Divine Comedy.
