'The island of Tuscany in Lombardy', so Gabriele D'Annunzio called Castiglione Olona. And, on the highest hill of the village, on the site of the ancient Castle of Castiglione stands the most important monument commissioned by the famous Cardinal Branda Castiglioni: the Collegiata. All this constitutes the first of many distinguishing features of this fascinating 15th-century Villa with garden, located a few steps away from the famous 'Church of Saints Stephen and Lawrence', most of which was frescoed by the famous Renaissance painter Masolino da Panicale. The Villa, part of the prestigious "Casa Magenta" complex, declared of important interest by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, underwent extensive restoration work in the early 2000s, among which the restoration of the wooden coffered ceiling, with distinctive pictorial ornamentation in each room on the mezzanine floor, is of considerable importance. The villa comprises approximately 350 square metres on three levels and is currently divided into 2 adjoining units, with a total of 11 rooms, 2 habitable kitchens and 4 bathrooms. Further details of the property, worthy of note, are the bridge room on Via Cardinal Branda and, below it, a tabernacle with fluted pilasters inside which was painted a Madonna and Child attributed to Masolino, preserved at the collegiate church museum and now replaced by a faithful reproduction. Castiglione Olona is a municipality in the province of Varese of about 8,000 inhabitants. It is about 45 minutes by car from Milan and Como, and only 15/20 minutes from Varese and the Swiss border. The nearest town is Tradate, a little more than 10 minutes by car, but various services such as primary and secondary schools, railway station and bus stops, supermarkets and medical services, are located within the municipality itself or not far from its borders. The main road in the village is the secant portion of the state road known as 'Varesina', connecting Varese and Milan. The municipality, rich in green and wooded areas, is part of the RTO park, a protected area of supra-municipal interest comprising 9 municipalities for a total of more than 1,500 hectares, rich in important sites of historical and cultural relevance. The municipality of Castiglione Olona is home to, among others, the Collegiata, Palazzo Branda Castiglioni and Monteruzzo Castle.
