Omegna: Location and surroundings of this property

Lake Orta is a beautiful lake in northern Italy in the Piemonte region, west of Lake Maggiore. The patron saint of the region is Saint Julius (4th century), who according to a local legend, has beaten the dragon that terrorised the lake. The town Orta San Giulio, built on a peninsula projecting from the east shore of the lake, is the main touristic village that attracts visitors from all over the world. The village is very characteristic and on top of the hill you can visit the Sacro Monte with a chain of chapels that are classified by UNESCO World Heritage. You can take a boat from the main square of the town to visit the lovely Isle of Saint Julius with the old monastery, often used as a wedding destination. The Island and the towns of Orta and Pella are connected by a boat service and taxi boats. The city of Omegna in the north is worth visiting with a medieval bell tower, baroque church and the Ponte Antico or medieval bridge over the Strona river. The Porta Romana is the only surviving medieval gate of Omegna. The town of Pettenasco is the main town on the east part and on the west shore you find the town of Pella and the church of Madonna del Sasso with a breath-taking view over the area. By train the southern end of the lake is about 35 kilometres (22 miles) of Novara on the main Turin-Milan line, while its north end is about 6 kilometres (4 miles) by rail south of the Gravellona-Toce railway station, half-way between Ornavasso and Omegna. From Omegna you can easily reach the motorway to Novara and Vercelli or towards Lago Maggiore. From the east side you are within half an hour in Arona or Stresa or on top of the Mottarone mountain. The airport of Milano-Malpensa can be reached within the hour.
