We are in the municipality of Bettona, land of vines and olive trees since the time of the Etruscans, it is a natural lookout overlooking a panoramic amphitheater among the most characteristic of Umbria, scenically created by the Central Apennines, in a semicircle that goes from Trasimeno lake up to Montefalco. It is an Etruscan outpost, located in the Umbrian territory, to the left of the Tiber, then a Roman municipality, inhabited by the ancient Vettonenses (Pliny the Elder, N.H. III, 114). Here you can taste excellent red and white wines of the Colli Martani DOC, produced essentially with Sangiovese, Grechetto and Trebbiano, perhaps combining them with excellent salami and the famous roast goose of the Bettonese tradition.
Its route as a walled city, formed by the remains of the city walls dating back to the 4th century BC, is intact. B.C. and from the medieval wall, 1000 meters long with torresini, towers, ramparts and drawbridge (XIII-XIV century), testifying to an important strategic situation. Of its history, important documentation remains in the Civic Museum, which houses an archaeological section of Etruscan and Roman finds, and a historical-artistic section with paintings, ceramics, furnishings, linked to local history.
On the central square overlook the church and the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the church and oratory of Sant'Andrea, the church of the patron Saint Crispolto and the church of the former convent of Sant'Antonio Abate, from which you can admire a unforgettable panorama of the Umbrian valley and the Subasio.
