Home organisation: ten ways to prepare your home for the new year

Once the festivities are over, it's time to get both your house and your to-do list in order for the new year. Now that the decorations and down and packed back into their respective boxes, you have the physical and mental space to do some much-needed home organisation.

Ten ways to prepare your home for the new year

Get your home ready for the year ahead with our helpful checklist.

1. Winter-proof your home

Winter is far from over, which means your house needs to be fully prepared against the weather. Consider cleaning out and maintaining your gutters, weather-stripping your doors and installing surge protectors. The better you protect your home now, the less you will have to repair later on.

2. Flip your mattress

Turning your mattress over every 4-6 months will help ensure it wears evenly and will air the fibres to decrease the risk of damp.

3. Declutter your home

Embrace minimalism and maximise your living space to get your home ready for the new year. Throw out or donate all of the excess you don’t need to make your home cleaner, and use storage boxes and baskets to tuck away loose items, kids' toys or precious possessions.

4. Reorganise your kitchen

The chaos of the Christmas season can wreak havoc on even the tidiest of kitchens. Get back on track by clearing out your pantry of old foods and reorganise your kitchen cupboards and drawers.

5. Visit the dry cleaners

With the Christmas and new year's Eve parties over, it's time to get your get ready for next year with a trip to the dry cleaners. Take your tablecloths, linens and napkins to be professionally cleaned so they'll be crisp and welcoming for your next party of guests.

6. Clean out the drawers

Everybody has at least one; that drawer that acts as a repository for all the odds and ends you have no other place for. To get your home ready for the new year, set aside an hour to go through this treasure trove and figure out how much of it is actually valuable or necessary.

7. Revamp your filing system

With the new year comes many a resolution to keep on top of paperwork. Start the year the way you intend to continue by creating a coordinated filing system to separate your different forms. That way they can be easily found when needed.

8. Examine your household energy budget

Winter is a good time for assessing the energy efficiency of your house. To help you make some positive changes, start with an energy audit, which will also help you to understand how you can cut back to reduce your gas and electricity bills.

9. Go green

The new year is also the perfect time to create some good habits, such as composting, recycling or repurposing old furniture. Bring nature indoors with a houseplant or two to add a refreshing splash of colour to your home décor.

10. Get your home ready for the market

The new year is a popular time for putting property on the market, as many sellers decide that they are looking for a change. If you want to sell your house, prepare for both valuations and viewings with home staging. Clean and arrange your furniture to optimise your space, and add homely details such as fresh flowers, bowls of fruit and decorative pictures to welcome potential buyers into your property.
