You don’t have to be on the career ladder in the property sector to become a real estate agent. - Start your career in real estate today, with our guide to real estate agent requirements.

What do you need to be a real estate agent?

In countries such as the USA, France, Spain and Italy, real estate agent requirements include an official licence to practice. These are issued by local or national authorities, and usually involve a test and legal checks. In others, such as Germany, the UK and Poland, real estate agent’s aren’t officially regulated. Instead they tend to be part of voluntary or self-regulating bodies that certify their standards, some of which will only certify companies, though others work with individuals too.

Market knowledge

Qualification isn’t only shown in certificates, however, and plenty of real estate agencies around the world value professional experience just as highly. You can show your understanding of the property market from your experience in any number of jobs. It could be as a property manager, where you picked up how to keep a building in top shape. You may have been an investor, lawyer or buyer, where understanding values and creative finance is second nature, or working in technology and learning the latest proptech trends. It’s all about knowing the skills that transfer.

If you have marketing and sales experience, and you know the features to highlight, how to get them to the top of online searches and how to clinch a deal: you’re moving into the ideal career.

It is, of course, important to note that the industry is always changing and evolving. As well as new technological developments, there are plenty of trends to stay on top of. Keeping your eye on strategies for real estate success in 2018 and beyond will ensure your skills always stay relevant.
