Living the Odyssey: a little walk in the land of Circe and Ulysses.
In the Agro Pontino there is a wonderful and imposing rise, visible on all sides and at all points.
It looks like an island when the dense haze envelops its base, but keeping a close eye it is easy to see that is the cape of the National Park of Circeo, that was known as the island of Eea, the wonderful place in which Ulysses was charmed by Circe in the Odyssey.
This beautiful place is positioned between San Felice Circeo and Sabaudia and is surrounded by the biggest wood of Italy: a Mediterrean forest with white lilies and reeds, populated by many animal species, as little fawns, deers, foxes and boars.
The real gem of the National Park of Circeo is the coastal dune, with its typical D shape, that stretches over 200 metres and in certain areas its height exceeds over 30 metres.
This beautiful coast is accessible from the bridge that crosses the Lake of Paola, an oasis of peace, whose waters are a valuable source of life for flocks of rare birds and many species of fish.
Across the forest is possible to admire various archeological treasures, as The Domitian’s Villa (1stcentury) that is an imperial domus composed by a thermal establishment and by some well-preserved tanks, the Pool of Lucullus and the Thermae of Torre Paola.
Going south there is the wonderful Gulf of Gaeta, characterized by a low-lying coastal area, that becomes steep coming closer to the Ausoni and Aurunci montains, that are the last part of the Central Appennine.
This particular territory is divided into two parts: the first one is the suggestive coast, full of renowned cities that are famous for their beautiful beaches, as Gaeta and its famous gulf, Sabaudia, the wonderful Sperlonga, San Felice Circeo, Terracina and Minturno; the inner part instead is known for its green hills and for the magic forests, alternating to pretty towns as Capodimele, Itri, Spigno, Saturnia, SS. Cosma e Damiano and Castelforte.
Going off the coast we find six famous Pontine islands: Ponza, Palmarola, Zannone, Gavi, Ventotene and S.Stefano, that are the holyday destination of hundreds and thousands of tourists every year.
